4 Tips For Maximizing the Lifespan of Your Acoustic Guitar Suzy S. Whether your acoustic guitar is brand new or gently used, you can do a few simple things to keep it in great condition! Follow these tips from guitar teacher Samuel B. to get the most out of your acoustic guitar Lets face it. Acoustic guitars can be an outright nuisance to keep in shape. Theyre delicate, sensitive to both humidity and temperature patterns, and often have weak central support. While the desire to keep yours both easily accessible and on display in a stand or on a rack is more than understandable, doing so increases its vulnerability. A few simple storage and maintenance provisions will prolong its shelf life and reduce (if not altogether eliminate) the need for repairs. 1. Keep it in the case when youre not playing. Although I recommend a hard shell case, any padded one will do just fine. The trick here is to keep your instrument out of the open air while youre not playing it. An unpadded soft shell case will not be much help here. Find a trustworthy robust alternative to protect your instrument. 2. Be sure your strings are the proper gauge. Installing over-sized strings is a very easy way of creating otherwise avoidable bends in the neck. My experience has been that most acoustic guitars (at the least the ones Ive played â€" Takamines and Martins) are light gauge friendly. Some of the more robust models (such as Guilds for example) rely on a heavier gauge of guitar string for optimal sound. Its best to find out as much information as possible about a models gauge compatibility before purchasing it. If you have questions about the right gauge of string for your guitar, talk to your guitar teacher or chat with an expert at a local guitar shop. 3. Keep the truss rod tight. The truss rod is the thin metal shaft aligned with (and within) the neck adjustable with an allen wrench. “Lefty loosey, righty tighty” is the relevant mnemonic device. Although Ive heard opinions on both sides of the fence here with regard to whether it should be regularly tightened or regularly loosened, Ive had the best results by checking it for tightness (for resistance to a clockwise turn in other words) in the middle of every string change. If youre not sure your truss rod is at the right level of resistance, you can always have it looked at by a professional. 4. Change strings as infrequently as possible. This may come as a surprise, but a college bandmate brought this to my attention at one point. While its true that professional musicians change strings after every performance, an instrument being used in a mostly non-performance capacity does not need this level of maintenance. As a matter of fact, changing strings too often is actually not good for an instrument that isnt receiving regular full-length concert treatment. Nightly string changes are perfectly appropriate for instruments like Willie Nelsons “Trigger”, Bruce Springsteens “Excalibur”, and Neil Youngs “Old Black.” After all, these three are regular conduits of colossal energy and need to be equipped with the appropriate elements to support it. However, an instrument being used for lessons, wood-shedding, or songwriting does not need this attention and actually benefits structurally from having the same set of strings retained for as long as possible. You woke up this week and realized the career direction you were headed in is no longer right for you. Knowing that isn’t a comfortable feeling; and you might even be denying it to some degree. You were very strong in your conviction of this goal, and it’s not an easy thing to let go of. How did you get to this point? Was your original career goal wrong to begin with? Should you really be thinking of reevaluating your career goals? It would be nice to think that, like some people out there, you knew what you wanted to be and stayed the course for the next 40 years. But that doesn’t happen to too many people, so don’t consider it a realistic expectation for you. Even when you have clarity about your direction, you don’t have to stay the course at all costs. Most careers weave in a variety of directions for all sorts of reasons, and if resetting your goals looks like the right thing to you, don’t waste your time worrying. It’s clearly think time. (Like this thought? Tweet it!) Let’s look at a few signs you may be ready for a reevaluation. Signs It’s Time to Reevaluate Your Career Goals 1. Now That You’re Close, It’s Not That Cool When we develop our ideas of our ideal career direction, we think of all the great things about that position. Usually there are several steps and a few positions to pursue before you arrive. At each step, you get better visibility, as well as more personal insight. It might not be that great now that you can see it better, or you simply might not want to do what it takes to make that next step. 2. Your Priorities Have Changed As we go through life, it has an interesting way of changing our minds about what’s important.  You may have changed your priorities without realizing it, and now that you have, your previously chosen career goal doesn’t fit well. 3. You Have Other Interests You may be at a point where you’ve discovered new directions for your career that now hold more interest to you. That’s fine because that’s how life works; the longer you live, the more new things you get exposed to. Whatever the reason for the change of heart, you need to move forward to rethink your career goals. Now you’ve arrived at this point, you have many different directions you could take and steps to go with them. You have work to do to to identify both your new direction and the steps you have to take to get there. Here are some starting points: Where You Can Go Now 1. Complete Career Change This one can be tricky because most of us really don’t know how to start from the beginning at figuring out a new career path. If you’re at a point where you’re ready to completely change course, it’s best to pull out all the tricks and settle in for a while to get this figured out. There are books to help you and career coaches that can help guide you through a self-discovery process. Note the emphasis on self-discovery. No, there is not an assessment that will tell you where you should go next.  As a career coach, I might help point you in the right direction, but you’ve got work to do to arrive at a good decision. 2. Course Correction You may have thought you wanted to be CFO, but now that you’re a group controller, you’re thinking Operations Management might be better for you.  While it’s a new career goal, the order of magnitude is more like a course correction. You can capitalize on your background to get to this new career goal, but you may need to figure out what assignments you need that will better qualify you. Speak to your management to get their viewpoint on things you can do to better qualify you. 3. One Step Back You may have gotten promoted, but now that you’re there, you realize you like your previous job better. This is no problem, unless you work for a company that can only see one direction for you in which case you will most likely need to leave for another company. If that isn’t the case, then speak to your management and HR about your career direction to see if they can help support it. You career is a constantly moving thing just like you.  No longer do we have a “life work” that goes on for decades, which means that rethinking and reevaluating your career goals will happen a few times. When that time comes for you, it may take some time to get used to the fact that you want to change direction, but once you’re there, do the work to make that next step really worth taking. Sanjiv is a graduate of Princeton University with a Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering. Check out his review of his alma mater: VT: Describe the campus setting and transportation options.How urban or safe is the campus?Are there buses or do you need a car/bike? Sanjiv: Princeton is located in the quaint little town of Princeton, NJ. The campus itself is beautiful, with trees lining the sidewalks and gothic architecture overlooking everything. The campus is very safe, and Public Safety can always be seen patrolling the campus spaces. There are very convenient bus lines to take you to nearby malls, and most restaurants are right at the edge of campus, so I knew very few students who had cars or needed one. We have a train station right at the end of campus as well, to travel 90 minutes to NYC. VT: How available are the professors, academic advisers, and teaching assistants? Sanjiv: Professors and advisors are very available, as the student-teacher ratio is very small. There are usually about 6,000 undergrads at Princeton each year, and class sizes are usually small, around 20-30 students, so you get a lot of attention even before going to office hours. Anytime you want to meet with a professor or TA, they are more than happy to meet with you, and you will often learn as much from an office hour session than the class session itself! VT: How would you describe the dorm life rooms, dining options, location, socialization opportunities with other students? Sanjiv: It is actually mandatory for students to live on campus for all four years, so you dont need to think too much about housing options! This enables students at Princeton to really get to know each other in their undergrad years. Housing is divided into five to six different colleges (Butler, Forbes, Rocky, etc.), in the same way that Harry Potters Hogwarts is divided into several schools of witchcraft! Each college has its own set of dorms and dining halls, each with its own personality and points of pride. The dorms themselves are very clean and top-notch, and dining options are often tasty. This kind of dorm life is amazing, and your freshman year, you will be absolutely certain to make tons of friends in your dorms. VT: Which majors/programs are best represented and supported?What did you study and why? Did the university do a good job supporting your particular area of study? Sanjiv: Princeton is often categorized as a liberal arts school, so its no surprise that its top majors include English, History, and Biology. However, Princeton is very much an undergraduate institution, and does not have many graduate programs; for this reason, you can be absolutely certain that every department is top-notch (for example, the Physics and Math departments are world-famous). I studied Electrical Engineering, because of my interest in robotics. The Electrical Engineering department is great, and is top-10 in the country. Like many departments, it is small (less than 100 students per year), so I was able to get a lot of attention, and have my pick of thesis topics in my senior year. VT: How easy or difficult was it for you to meet people and make friends as a freshman? Does Greek life play a significant role in the campus social life? Sanjiv: As a freshman, it is extremely easy to make friends, partly because of the mandatory on-campus housing rule. Everyone is friendly and you soon figure out that the admissions office has brought together people of entirely different and amazing backgrounds, so everyone wants to find out each others story! I highly recommend becoming involved in clubs/organizations/sports as a freshman because you will meet many awesome friends for those four years. There is not much Greek life on campus because fraternities/sororities are not recognized by the university; in place of that are institutions called eating clubs, which are not technically Greek, but serve the same functions (hosting parties, charity events, etc.). VT: How helpful is the Career Centerand other student support services?Do many reputable companies recruit on campus? Sanjiv: The Career Center is helpful in your junior and senior years for preparing for internships and job interviews. However, I would highly recommend the following instead: find an upperclassman or professor who is studying/working in the field you want to work in, and ask their advice on how to get where they are. The Career Center can you give you general advice, but a person in your field of study can give you specific advice on how to pursue that career. Very reputable companies come to recruit on campus in the fall and spring, especially to recruit for internships. Its not uncommon to be recruited for internships as early as your freshman year. Examples include Google, D.E. Shaw, investment banks, etc. VT: How are the various study areas such aslibraries, the student union, and dorm lounges? Are they over-crowded, easily available, spacious? Sanjiv: The study areas are almost always easily available and spacious. Right before exams, many students will be spending the night at certain study lounges in the student union, so its not advisable to wait until the night before to stake out a space! The dorm lounges are a great place to study, as some serve food even late into the night. VT: Describe the surrounding town. What kinds of outside establishments / things to do are there that make it fun, boring, or somewhere in between?To what extent do students go to the downtown area of the city versus staying near campus? Sanjiv: The surrounding town of Princeton, NJ itself has many restaurants and clothing shops (J. Crew etc.), but as far as theatres or nightclubs, there are very few. The Princeton social life exists 1) on campus, and 2) in New York City. While there are always lots of fun events to attend on campus, many times, students will head to NYC for the weekend. In your freshman year, the dorms will sponsor group trips and very discounted tickets to see plays on Broadway. VT: How big or small is the student body? Were you generally pleased or displeased with the typical class sizes? Sanjiv: The student body is quite small, about 6,000 undergraduates, and perhaps a few thousand graduate students. Class sizes were always relatively small, about 20-30 per class, so I could always get help and get my questions answered when needed. One important thing to consider, however, is that because the student body is so small, it can take some time to find your social niche. So, in one respect, bigger schools have that advantage over Princeton. VT: Describe one memorable experience with a professor and/or class. Perhaps one you loved the most or one youregretthe most. Sanjiv: Once, in a math class, during a lecture on game theory, the professor mentioned the contributions of John Nash, the protagonist of the film, A Beautiful Mind. A few hours after the class was over, my friend and I were standing in the elevator when Professor John Nash himself walked in. We froze, as we wanted to ask him something, but didnt know what to ask him that would be worth his time. He seemed very engrossed in a paper he was reading, so we didnt ask for his autograph.
